Shopping
Galle is not exactly a shopping city, and many people end up going to Colombo regularly for everything. This can be minimised by getting to know the town well, do not expect to be able to get everything in Galle.
Some shops will be able to order things they do not usually stock for you. Also beware that some items, especially imported perishables or luxury items, may be stocked irregularly or cease to be available: so buy them while you can.
Key shops
Seafair: on the coast road on the left (land side) heading out of town going east. Seafair Supermarket: further down the same road on the right (sea side). Cargills: in the town centre. parking is awkward. Cargills: Vijitha Yapa: a small bookshop, but occasionally useful.
Markets and small shops
There is a useful market in the centre of Galle, many roadside vendors, and many small shops. These usually offer better prices and often better quality than the supermarkets for certain products: especially fresh food.
They do not have marked prices, therefore you may pay higher prices if you look likely to pay it. They also tend to keep the best produce for their favourite customers.
The small butchers generally have the best meat, but you cannot buy pork from them as all the butchers as Muslims. You should also be aware that in Sri Lanka, as in much of South Asia, "mutton" means goat and sheep is refered to as lamb regardless of age.
Organic food is hard to find, but (to our knowledge) chicken and pork are occasionally available.
